The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, family, fraternal and service organization. The key elements of our Service Program are Church, community, council, family, pro-life, and youth activities. The council has donated over $152,000 and countless volunteer hours to various charities since 2009. The major fund raising activities are weekly bingo games, monthly Texas Hold’em tournaments, dinners served at the hall and manning two concession stands at Penn State football games.

Equally important, these activities provide opportunities for fellowship and social interactions among the Knights and their families. A complete list of our donations and activities would be difficult to enumerate, but a description of our major and reoccurring activities is below. Please join us in keeping these activities going and help us do more for our Churches and community.

Church

The most important service we provide is our support to our Parishes. Many of our members serve on Parrish and OVLCS councils, as ushers, choir members, CCD instructors, greeters, Eucharistic ministers and lectors at our Churches.  In 2010 we organized a Year for Priests banquet to recognize the dedication of our local clergy.

Our Council is the top contributor to the Seminarian fund of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese among the many K of C councils in the diocese, donating more than $6,000 to this cause over the last 5 years alone!

Council 4678 supports spreading the word of God through modern media. We are a major contributor to Voice of Devine Mercy Catholic Radio, an initiative to acquire and broadcast Catholic radio programming throughout the region. We sponsor the live broadcast of the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass on ESPN Radio 1450, allowing those unable to travel to the church to participate in the Eucharistic Celebration.

We are firmly committed to advancing the faith through strong support of Catholic education. The Council is completing its pledge of $100,000 to fund the new Catholic High School, St. Joseph’s Academy, and has pledged $35,000 to renovate the technology room at the Our Lady of Victory Catholic School. Council 4678 also provides one scholarship to a needy family at OLVCS each year and has donated funds for numerous smaller items such as a defibrillator to the school, support of the OLV Parent Teacher Group (PTG) organization and OLV Catholic preschool needs.

The Council is a yearly gold-level
supporter of the OLV Sports Booster Club, an organization that provides sporting activities to area Catholic youth, including those attending the Our Lady of Victory and Good Shepherd Churches. The K of C Club donates the use of our hall to OLVCS and OLV Church for numerous CCD religious education events and retreats held throughout the year.

Community

Knights of Columbus Council 4678 sponsors an annual 5K run to support the Schlow Memorial  Library in State College. Proceeds from our fundraisers have benefited the Centre Volunteers in Medicine (CVM), which provides free health care to those in need in the Centre County region, to the Centre County Food bank, Catholic Charities, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels

The Knights of Columbus is an international organization, and the reach of our Council extends far beyond the boarders of Center County. We are active in supporting people in need across the globe, including Philippines Typhoon Relief, The African Book Project and the Hope for Anawim charity.  Hope for Anawim was founded by Knight and Priest, Father Charles Ugo (now pastor of St Joseph’s in Renovo), and assisted by other Knights in our Council.

The Knights of Columbus organize  regular blood drives run by the Red Cross at the Council’s home. Since March 2006, we have collected 1,876 units of blood, which helped to save up to 5,628 lives!!!!

Council and family

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization. Our charitable and service activities provide many benefits to those who volunteer. It provides our members and their families a chance for spiritual and personal growth and social interactions.

Our Council runs an annual Easter Egg Hunt the day before Easter Sunday. The event is open to the public and is free of charge. Children hunt for real dyed eggs and afterwards are treated to a gift bag from the Easter Bunny, who is more than willing to pose for a photo or two.  Refreshments are provided to all guests.

We organize a picnic at the end of August every year. It was previously called the “Men’s picnic”, but now is open to spouses, people who have volunteered at Council events throughout the year and anyone interested in joining the Knights of Columbus.

We have monthly meetings to discuss Council business where all Knights can participate and vote. Monthly Social Nights in the newly renovated game room in our Council’s home have started recently. You are welcome to stop by to play pool, darts or cards. Dinner and snacks are provided. If you are interested in joining the Council, this is another great opportunity to get to know us.

Pro-life

Support for the protection and dignity of human life is a high priority of the Knights of Columbus. Our Council donates to State and Supreme Council initiatives for Life and the sanctity of marriage. Locally, we run a yearly Baby Bottle campaign to benefit the Gabriel Project, a parish-based program that provides financial, medical and spiritual support to women with difficult pregnancies. The campaign has raised over 41,000 over the last four years.

Youth

Our support to OLVCS and CCD programs are described above. However, we have other activities serving the youth of our Council and beyond. Members of the Knights of Columbus organize and run local and state-wide basketball free throw and soccer competitions for the area youth. These competitions are open to all regardless of religious affiliation.

Our council chartered Boy Scout Troop 83 and donated many items for their use, including providing the Bibles awarded to Eagle Scouts of the Troop. The K of C club donates the use of the hall for their weekly meetings, as well. The Troop helps support the Council, providing many hours of volunteer work at our annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Our Council awards a college scholarship each year and the winner is eligible for the state scholarship. Children and grandchildren of members of the Knights of Columbus are eligible. Call for applications go out around December and are advertised on our website and at OLV and GS churches.

For over 25 years, our council has provided a large number of the volunteers for the Aquatics competition of the Pennsylvania Special Olympics event held on Penn State’s campus each June. We run a measure up campaign to support for those with disabilities to benefit the ARC of Centre County.

We sponsor Masses at our local churches for sick and deceased members of our Council and arrange for a rosary service at funeral wakes of deceased members. Brothers in distress and requiring assistance are encouraged to contact the Council or one of its members.
